George Osborne: Non-dom announcement is just ‘tinkering’
The Conservatives seem slightly split on their response to Labour’s non-dom announcement. George Osborne says that changes amount to “tinkering around the edges” and that the changes do not actually amount to abolishing non-dom status.
Nicky Morgan, the education secretary, says that she wants to see a Britain where all residents pay tax.
She added: “I don’t think anyone would disagree that people should be paying taxes here.”
Asked whether she believed non-doms should pay tax in the UK on their overseas earnings, she said: “That’s exactly what we have said, both individuals and corporates.”
She added that it was time to “have a debate about it.”
