Nuneaton exposes Labour’s big weakness
The Nuneaton result for Labour is really bad – it’s a seat that they would have hoped to win with a small swing to them but they failed and the reason why illustrates the complications now facing the Labour party.
The biggest thing that is happening in Nuneaton is that the Lib Dem vote completely collapsed. My hunch is the large part of that went to the Tories either on the basis of voting for the real thing – ie the Tory heart of the coalition – or as urged by right wing broadsheets as a tactical vote to stop the Labour/SNP government.
I interviewed Cameron in Nuneaton on the day that the Conservatives won the local council – I asked him then does this mean that the Tories are now welcome in these mining heartlands
He said no – we’ve got a lot more to do. I wonder what he’d say today?
