Located at the crossroads of several trade routes since the second millennium BC, Aleppo is now at the centre of fighting between the Syrian military and various religious groups. Airstrikes, including barrel bombs, and explosives attacks by rebels, have completely destroyed historic buildings and homes in the central district of the city.

The Umayyad Mosque of Aleppo was built at the beginning of the 8th century. In April 2013 shelling destroyed the mosque’s minaret and it has suffered other widespread damage. Rebels and the regime blamed each other for the damage to the mosque.
